Soft Washing vs. Pressure Washing: Which Does Your Home Need?

They are not the same service, and using the wrong one is how siding gets streaked and roofs lose granules. Here is how to tell them apart.
The actual difference is chemistry versus force
Pressure washing removes dirt with mechanical force — water moving fast enough to physically blast material off a hard surface. Soft washing removes dirt with a cleaning solution applied at roughly garden-hose pressure, which kills organic growth and lets it rinse away.
That distinction matters because most of what makes a Georgia home look dirty is alive. Algae, mildew, moss and lichen are organisms. Blasting them off removes the visible layer but leaves the root structure, which is why a pressure-washed roof or wall greens back up so quickly.
Which surfaces get which treatment
Soft wash: roofs, all siding types, stucco and EIFS, painted wood, screens, soffits and fascia, and anything with a seam that water could be driven behind.
Pressure wash: concrete driveways, sidewalks, patios, pool decks, masonry hardscape and most unpainted flatwork — always with a surface cleaner rather than a bare wand for even results.
What damage from the wrong choice looks like
On vinyl siding, high pressure leaves permanent wand arcs and can force water behind panels and into wall cavities. On a shingle roof, it strips the mineral granules that protect the asphalt and voids most manufacturer warranties. On old brick, it erodes soft lime mortar.
None of these show up immediately, which is why homeowners often do not connect the damage to the cleaning until a year or two later.
How we decide
We look at the material, the age, the paint condition and what is actually growing on it, and then use the least aggressive method that will fully do the job. On most CSRA homes that means the walls and roof get soft washed and the flatwork gets pressure washed — in the same visit.
